Chapter 20

Addie stopped outside the library door. From her vantage point, she could see Marc hunched over the desk and assumed by the arm of a buff-colored suit jacket that he was standing behind Felix. She hoped that meant they had found some of the paperwork regarding the book purchases.

Paige and Catherine continued up the passageway toward the Edwardian dining room to seek out their targets for interrogation. Addie mentally crossed her fingers that her two friends would be able to handle their assignments discreetly as to not raise any suspicions. No one needed the impression that they were suspects on a homemade crime board.

Addie knocked on the glass. Marc glanced over from the office and then returned his focus to whatever it was he was reading at the desk.

Addie knocked again, this time with more force, and Jerry, who was seated on the sofa, packing evidence bags into his black crime-scene case, strode to the door.

“What can we do for you?” he asked as the door slid open.

“I was hoping to speak to Marc if he’s not busy.”

“That’s fine,” Marc called, and waved her in. “I think we could use Miss Greyborne’s eyes on this, too.”

Excitement built in Addie’s chest as she sauntered into the library. This could only mean they had found something. Finally, a few answers to help eliminate a few of the motives piling up on her board.

“Ah, Miss Greyborne,” said Felix, removing his dark-framed glasses and laying them on the desk. “I was just going to come to find you.”

“Did you find some of the authentic certificates and bills of sale?” she asked hopefully.

He sat back and grinned as his gaze darted from Addie to Marc. “We have, and I feel as though I have been vindicated by them.” He turned a printed copy of a spreadsheet toward her. “As you can see, many of the books in question are listed here not only with the broker’s or bookseller’s name and contact information but also with the corresponding certification numbers and provenance documentation of many of the books.”

She scanned the papers in her hand. “So, according to this, all the books we discovered were originals when purchased?”

“Correct.” Felix pulled a folder from the bottom of the papers still on the desk. “Here are the corresponding certificates.”

“We matched the certificates to the line entries on there, and it all looks like it’s in order,” said Marc. “I guess your theory about some of the books not being original first editions was incorrect, and we have to work another angle on this investigation.”

Addie focused on the line entries on the page. How could she have been so wrong in her assessment that many of these books were not originals? “Yes, it looks like everything is here.” She read one entry after the other. “I must say that Oliver has kept very detailed records.”

“When he’s dealing in the dollar amounts that his collection is worth, it’s necessary, and it’s a good thing, too, for when something like this arises.
